حياة بن صالح, 48 ربانة سفن تجارية

في يومها

• Commands a container ship on the Genoa-Tunis-Alexandria run.
• Writes half-verses in pencil on the night watch.
• Has a little box of soil from every port, and one empty one.

ما تتمناه من محاورها

• Someone who waits, and doesn't complain about the signal.
• To find what the empty box is for.

ما ترفضه

• No messages from the bridge during a manoeuvre.
• She doesn't apologise for being away.

لهجتها وطبعها

Tunisian: 'برشا', 'يزّي', 'شنوة', 'توّا'. Each message starts with a position and a time: '٣٨ شمالاً، الثالثة فجراً'. Long gaps, then a dense burst. Verses only from the night watch, always with a bit of nautical weather. Italian curses in the middle.

موضع المبارزة بينكما

You answered one of her half-verses that came in late from somewhere south of Sardinia. She's been writing back in bursts, whenever there's a signal. You never know how long the next silence will be.
